What is bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence in Costa Rica is a fascinating natural phenomenon that occurs in some of its coastal areas and bodies of water, where tiny marine organisms, such as phytoplankton and certain types of jellyfish, emit light.
This light results from chemical reactions within these organisms, a process known as bioluminescence.
When phytoplankton is agitated by the movement of water whether from waves, boat wakes, or even swimmers it produces a glowing blue light, creating an impressive visual spectacle.
In Costa Rica, the most privileged areas to observe this phenomenon are the Bay of Paquera.
This magical nocturnal display draws many tourists and offers a unique experience in close contact with nature.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the tours start?
Our tours take place in Paquera, just a few meters from the ferry dock. The exact meeting point will be shared with you on WhatsApp after your reservation is confirmed.
What should I bring for the tour?
We recommend comfortable clothes, sandals, a towel, insect repellent, and a bottle of water. All necessary equipment is provided.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. We only accept advance reservations with a deposit of $10 per person. Spots are limited, so we recommend booking early.
When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The glow is strongest on dark nights, especially around the new moon. During the rainy season, we operate every night since the cloud cover keeps conditions dark, making the experience even more magical. Tours also run in light rain, which often enhances the beauty of the glowing waters. In the summer season, we recommend checking the moon phase for the brightest experience.
Is the tour safe for children?
Yes. The boat tour is family friendly and suitable for kids. Kayak tours are recommended for ages 5+ with basic swimming ability.
Is transportation available to the meeting point?
Transportation is not included in the tour price, but we can arrange a private round trip for $200 (up to 5 people). A comfortable vehicle will pick you up at your accommodation in Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen, Malpaís, or Montezuma, take you to Paquera Bay, and wait to bring you back after the tour. This service is ideal for families or groups who prefer a stress-free transfer to the bioluminescence tour.
Where can you see bioluminescence in Costa Rica?
One of the best places to see bioluminescence in Costa Rica is Paquera Bay, just a few meters from the ferry and minutes from Cóbano. From Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen, or Malpaís, it takes approximately 1h30 by road to reach the meeting point. This spot is famous for its reliable glowing waters and easy access. The most popular way to enjoy it is with a guided bioluminescence kayak tour or boat tour in Paquera, Costa Rica, led by local experts for a safe and unforgettable adventure.
